We were pleasantly surprised when we saw the results in the lower image. (NO, I didn't doctor the image.)
From what we are able to determine, alaska-bike-rentals has been on the first page of Google since the summer of 2008. We built alaska-bike-rentals.com in 2006. We didn't aggressively try to improve the sites ranking all at once.
After seeing the results, we experimented with a few of our other sites and are making great progress. It is all about the CONTENT and how the content is presented.
