NWDS Special Web Projects

NorthWest Data Solutions provided custom software development support on the following projects for our clients.

Joint Execution and Planning System (JEPES)

JEPES provides an integrated set of tools for the Joint Task Force Engineer Staff to plan, assess, and execute joint engineering requirements in accordance with Combatant Command's (COCOM) stated requirements. JEPES supports development of quantitative aspects of general engineering support planning and provides general requirements for engineer support planning associated with Operational Plan (OPLAN) development. JEPES supports the execution phase of operations by providing GIS capability to perform real time engineering analysis to solve operational problems in a timely manner.

The JEPES Architecture is 100% SOA-based and the application is hosted in the Global Combat Support System (GCSS) 6.1-SOA-based enterprise environment.

Communities of Interest (COI)/Enterprise Working Group Support

In support of the Alaska I Project, NWDS supported JITC Alaska in designing and developing prototype SOA applications in support of both enterprise-wide services and COI services. Enterprise-wide services are those used by all of the DoD, whereas a group focused on a particular subset of DoD activities uses COI services. SOA implemented in this development and demonstration environment exposed the services and data needed to grant access to all users at any point in the process. The design allows access to historical, current and projected status to all members of the COI as desired.

JITC Alaska COI/Enterprise SOA, designed for communication over existing enterprise networks, provided core functions such as status services, error services, event-logging services, discovery services, mediation/reference services, web services, and GIS visualization services. The SOA design was to function with multiple operating systems and hardware hosts, multiple database management systems, and multiple Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) environments

Alaska Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Integration (ARI) Project

NWDS helped the ARI Team guarantee delivery of innovative EAI software to the DoD that would achieve rapid adoption of Automatic Identification Technology (RFID-enabled) supply chain management. The project included a system prototype that aggregated item level data from passive RFID tags into active RFID tags during inter-modal distribution operations, demonstrating and evaluating the benefits of this integration. The prototype successfully demonstrated, across the various modes of transportation (land, sea, and air), shipments from one Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) distribution center to US Army and Air Force retail/base-level systems in Alaska.

The ARI Team’s experience and proven performance in the areas of RFID systems, Net-Centric services/technologies, logistics data/data management, and education and training provided a unique and powerful set of capabilities that contributed to the success of this project.

Disaster Preparedness/First Responders

In response to USNORTHCOM mission requirements for Hurricane season 2006, NWDS helped JITC Alaska design, develop, and deploy an infrastructure availability and disaster-tracking tool in less than 21 days, as opposed to years of development required for other systems. Currently, this tool is supports responders for the 2007 Hurricane season.

The USNORTHCOM application provides the fusion of data in GIS, enhancing the ability to analyze and discern an area’s infrastructure capability. Users have access to real time hurricane, tornado and forest fire information that can be queried for additional information directly from a map.

 

Joint Supply Management Module (JSMM)

Developed, tested and supported from JITC Alaska with the development support of NWDS, JSMM is an application that provides an integrated set of tools for the Joint and Service Commodity Managers. JSMM provides a generic reporting system so the operational planner can monitor critical commodities (such as munitions, and petroleum, oil and lubricants). Items are tracked, aggregated, visualized and reported. JSMM enables users to forecast requirements and compare resources on hand with what is due in, allowing users to anticipate potential problems. It also allows users to publish commodity status and alert users before the actual situation varies from the plan and operation. It is hosted on the GCSS 6.1 – Joint enterprise environment.

Joint Logistics Analysis Tool (JLAT)

JLAT is a forecasting tool designed to allow logisticians the ability to compute demand for repair parts, fuels, ammunitions, water, and food to sustain a force. Currently, forecasts only return the demand on equipment going to the field, not the parts to sustain them. The JLAT project began with the design phase in April 2007. As with many applications designed at JITC Alaska, these tools can interface seamlessly and often re-use portions of previously developed tools, making the product deployment not only faster but also cost effective.

To date, NWDS has only provided initial architecture and design consulting for this project.

DoD Data Management Enterprise Services(DDMES)

Program focused on developing a set of enterprise services in the logistics arena. In particular, enterprise services supporting dramatic improvements for the logistics Community of Interest (COI). The objective of the demonstration program was to develop and demonstrate the technical concepts and evaluate the engineering design factors related to implementing these Services (primarily Discovery and Mediation services) using the life-cycle of a Materiel Item Requisition (MIR) as the test case. The demonstration program design included a number of laboratory, field exercise, and operational environments. The actual development, test, and demonstration program requirements were developed and refined in partnership with the Government throughout the life of the program.

NWDS focused on designing & developing an online store (SuperStore) for the warfighter. The application was initially developed using BEA WebLogic Server and then ported over to the .NET environment. Secure Web services were used extensively. NWDS also developed a handheld version of the SuperStore.

Web security was also researched thoroughly in this project. NWDS developed several demonstation applications that integrated diverse platforms and databases.
