Express Yourself Expeditors is located in Anchorage, Alaska and specializes in supplying groceries from the Warehouse Club Stores and other vendors to the people that live and work through out rural Alaska.

Express Yourself Expeditors had an order tracking system developed by another vendor utilizing Microsoft Access forms and reports. Several shortcomings/bugs were identified in the system and needed to be fixed. My main role was Project Manager. I was responsible for analyzing the existing system, learning the business processes at EYE, producing a bid offer with an alternative solution, and managing the employees assigned to the project. I provided guidance to the project team and helped in coding parts of the system.

The system was developed in 2007 by another vendor. During the year in service, several shortcomings/bugs were identified in the system and needed to be fixed. I was asked to learn the code and the back-end database schema and perform maintenance tasks on the system. After finding the source of the issues and fixing the bugs, the system was tested in a test environment and deployed into production.

GCI Managed Broadband Portal Integration September 2008
 Technologies:

  • PHP
  • Python
  • JavaScript
  • Drupal Content Management System
  • Video Conference Systems (Polycom and Tandberg)

GCI's Managed Broadband segment offers Internet access and related services to schools and health organizations. SchoolAccess is a suite of services designed to advance the educational opportunities of students in underserved regions of the country. SchoolAccess division provides Internet and distance learning services designed exclusively for the school environment. The Schools and Libraries Program of the Universal Service Fund makes discounts available to eligible rural school districts for telecommunication services and monthly Internet service charges.

I came back to GCI to help the Managed Broadband office with integration of their Content Management System (Drupal). Drupal is an open-source (PHP) content management platform which is used by GCI to provide up-to-date information to their broadband customers on status of the servers/routers/links. One of my responsibilities was to enable portal users to view screen captures off of video conference systems (Polycom and Tandberg). I had to write a custom script in Python language that downloaded the images from active cameras. I also helped in Portal integration, providing research and general Drupal knowledge to the project manager.

ABC Written Orders System April - August 2008

 Technologies:

  • Microsoft ASP.NET
  • Microsoft C#.NET

The system enables the package stores processing the orders to verify that the purchaser has sufficient amounts remaining in their monthly limit before shipping an order.

I was the key part of the project development team at both development and deployment phases. One of the challenges that we faced was setting project requirements and customer's expectations. Our development team constantly made changes to the code base in response to evolving project requirements. During the deployment of the project I was responsible for deploying the code/database onto the test and later the production systems at ABC's facilities.

 ROP Check April 2007 - June 2008
 Technologies:

  • VB.NET
  • MS SQL Express 2005

Retionapthy of Prematurity Check (ROP Check) program provided the doctors and supporting personnel at the Providence Medical Center's Neonatology Intensive Care Unit a complete solution for keeping track of prematurely born babies. The software provides a graphical means of documenting a laser procedure when a baby is treated and document any additional information. The program allows for automatic scheduling of exams and treatments based on several critical criteria of the newly arriving baby. The program can generate a billing report for the billing department with correct billing codes.

The project lacked any kind of documentation either for the code/database or requirements/functionality. I was able to review the requirements with the doctor leading the project and understand the structure of the code and the associated database. Created new functionality and fixed the existing code to be up-to-date on requirements. Modified the database to support the needed functionality. Provided constructive feedback to the customer on possibility/time-frame of new functionality. Tested the program to ensure correct algorithm for scheduling and re-scheduling new exams.

The Depository Trust Company (DTC) is a member of the U.S. Federal Reserve System, a limited-purpose trust company under New York State banking law and a registered clearing agency with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The depository brings efficiency to the securities industry by retaining custody of some 2 million securities issues, effectively “dematerializing” most of them so that they exist only as electronic files rather than as countless pieces of paper. The depository also provides the services necessary for the maintenance of the securities it has in custody.

I reviewed initial requirements for the project and modified them as necessary after conducting a study with the project lead and end users. I provided a complete solution to Alaska USA Trust Company that interfaced with the existing software that lacked the ability to send/receive trade information to/from the DTC. This software package significantly reduced the workload for Alaska USA Trust Company's employees processing trade information on a daily basis.

LeadWizard June - August 2007
 Technologies:

  • Microsoft .NET Compact Framework
  • Pocket PC 2003 SE & Windows Mobile 5
  • Barcode scanner and Magnetic stripe reader integration
  • Bluetooth printer integration

LeadWizard and LeadRental programs are designed to facilitate lead retrieval and storage at trade shows. A handheld unit with  either a barcode reader or a magnetic stripe reader retrieves the lead information from a barcoded badge or a magnetic stripe badge. The leads can then be stored on the handheld and synchronized with a laptop or a PC. All of the lead's information can then be printed utilizing a bluetooth printer.

The customer didn't provide any code documentation and was vague on the requirements. I reviewed the code and completed all tasks assigned by the customer including integration of the bluetooth printer, creating version of the program with different access rights for users, and naming of different versions of the program.

Alaska Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Integration (ARI) Project.  NWDS helped the ARI Team guarantee delivery of innovative EAI software to the DoD that would achieve rapid adoption of Automatic Identification Technology (RFID-enabled) supply chain management. The project included a system prototype that aggregated item level data from passive RFID tags into active RFID tags during inter-modal distribution operations, demonstrating and evaluating the benefits of this integration. The prototype successfully demonstrated, across the various modes of transportation (land, sea, and air), shipments from one Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) distribution center to US Army and Air Force retail/base-level systems in Alaska. The ARI Team’s experience and proven performance in the areas of RFID systems, Net-Centric services/technologies, logistics data/data management, and education and training provided a unique and powerful set of capabilities that contributed to the success of this project.

Developed the handheld part of the project from the ground-up. Reviewed the requirements that the project manager provided to me and coded the application to the specifications. One of the big parts of the project was creation of web-services for data transmission and authentication. I accomplished this using custom SH5 algorithm class on the handheld side passing it through an SSL connection to the database for authentication.

Accomplished integrating the developed handheld software with both Windows Pocket PC2003 SE and Windows Mobile 5 units. Part of the specifications required reading RFID and barcode tags using readers from different manufacturers. I was able to provide support to all required readers in one custom solution.
